This role is an opportunity to be part of one of Australia’s most exciting and innovative media companies. Working with and reporting to the Broadsheet Melbourne editor, the Broadsheet Melbourne assistant editor will work across all editorial aspects of Broadsheet, one of Australia’s leading print and digital publishers.

The assistant editor will help generate and edit stories, write and report breaking news, commission writers and photographers, publish articles, manage interns, and assist in other day-to-day operations of the publication.

The Broadsheet editorial team is focused on increasing its audience through compelling, engaging, high-quality editorial. We’re looking for a gun media creator with ruthless attention to detail, a strong work ethic, a passion for story-telling, a critical eye, a healthy competitive streak and an endless curiosity about their city.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience in a publishing, media or news environment with a focus on digital (prior experience or training in journalism is preferable)
  • Experience researching, pitching, interviewing talent, writing and editing for digital audiences
  • Highly organised (good at prioritising, time management, multi-tasking, planning effectively)
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Flexibility in a constantly changing news environment, including working flexible hours to meet deadlines
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work calmly and efficiently under pressure
  • Strong understanding of online publishing tools and social media
  • A solid interest in and network across food, arts, culture and media
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Some photography experience preferred
  • A solid understanding of the Broadsheet visual style and tone
