The Consultancy Service

Are you looking for an opportunity to be part of a dynamic, passionate, supportive and highly skilled team of psychologists where you can use your skills across a range of clinical populations? Our service is constantly growing, so if you are a proactive Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with a strong client-focus, excellent communication skills and a “can-do” attitude, we want to hear from you.

Our service specialises in developing and delivering community based services for St Andrew’s. We currently offer a range of services including, a busy private therapy clinic, an Expert Witness Service, Diagnostic Assessment Clinics (ADHD and ASD), a Complex Treatment Service for Military Veterans and Transforming Rehabilitation Service in London. We also provide case consultation and reflective practice for Children’s Homes as well as running teaching sessions at schools, universities, care homes and local businesses on a variety of topics including mindfulness and stress management.

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic psychologist to join our team to primarily provide therapy in our Veterans’ Mental Health Complex Treatment Service. The ideal candidate will be looking for a varied role and bring specific expertise in trauma therapy with adults and working with complex presentations.

The Role and Person

In April 2018 we were commissioned by NHS England to provide a specialist Complex Treatment Service for Military Veterans across the East Midlands and East of England. Veterans are referred by colleagues in the Transition Intervention Liaison Services in Essex and Lincoln for psychological support with service related trauma and/or mental health needs, with the expectation that they will be seen as close to their homes as possible. The demand for the service, as well as the vast geography we cover means we need to increase our capacity in the East Midlands (Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire).

The successful applicant will join a highly motivated, supportive and friendly team which includes Psychologists, CBT Therapists, Assistant Psychologists, Social Work and Mental Health Nurses, and will report directly to the Clinical Lead. The service is psychology-led and holds psychological assessment and formulation, as well as the Veterans we work with, at the core of everything it offers.

You will be responsible for delivering outcome based psychological therapy for a minimum of 22 sessions that is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of Veterans living in the East Midlands. The service is community based and appointments are offered where possible in the Veteran’s locality. Although the Consultancy Service offices are based in Northampton, the post holder will also be required to deliver psychological services away from this base introducing variety to the structure of your week. Due to the travel required, a full driver’s licence is essential. However, in return, you will also benefit from having the flexibility to work from home when appropriate to do so.

Given the nature of the client group and the geographical needs of the service, we are looking for a clinician with significant experience in treating complex mental health needs in an autonomous capacity. Whilst previous experience in working with Veterans would be an advantage, full training will be provided to clinicians who have relevant clinical experience and who have a genuine interest in developing skills to help Veterans improve their quality of life and wellbeing. Being able to demonstrate a minimum of two years’ post qualification experience in treating trauma and complex mental health needs according to evidenced based guidelines is essential. Experience of using a range of therapeutic modalities including CBT, EMDR and Compassion Focused Therapy would also be an advantage. Equally important would be your ability to work both autonomously within community based settings, as well as collaboratively with other teams and professionals. The ability to consider and find creative and flexible solutions to engage individuals in psychological treatment is an essential skill in this setting.

You will be able to work independently, as well as closely and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, given you will be working in close collaboration with our wider Complex Treatment Service and partner Treatment Intervention and Liaison Services (TILS) located in Lincoln, as well as other Charities and Organisations that form part of the Veteran’s Network. You will have experience of effective communication and joint working given you will be working with our Clinical Liaison Nurses to assess and support each Veteran on your case load.

We operate a supportive and collaborative team ethos and therefore being an integral member of our team, you may also be asked to provide cover for other clinicians when on leave. Given that we are a dynamic and growing service, you may also have the opportunity to get involved in new projects relevant to your skill set.

In summary, this role will suit a person already located in the East Midlands who has a genuine interest in working with Veterans and the clinical experience to match. You will have an established track record of successfully treating individuals with complex mental health presentations and an established ethos of using outcome data and service user feedback to dynamically inform treatment. You will be eager to take ownership and responsibility for delivering your work and will be self-driven, results-oriented and be able to demonstrate excellent time management and organisational skills.

Within the role, you will be encouraged to develop your strengths and skills through a robust structure of clinical supervision and opportunities for professional development. St Andrews has an excellent record of providing opportunities for research, training and continuing professional development so you will also have access to peer support from the wider Charity, as well as regular CPD events. Due to the pioneering nature of this service, there will be opportunities for service development including co-production with service users and an interest and enthusiasm in these areas is desired. You will also be supported to develop your role within our service according to your specific strengths and areas of professional interest.

In order to be eligible for the role, the successful applicant will be registered with the HCPC and BPS.

One of our new psychologists who recently joined our team had this to say about us: “What a refreshing and dynamic team! The clinicians are friendly and warm but also focused and driven. It’s amazing how quickly things get progressed here from ideas into actions”.

If this sounds like your type of working environment, we look forward to receiving your application.

Reward

We offer an excellent benefits package including pension, 38 days holiday, sickness policy on par with NHS, life cover, car lease scheme, cycle to work scheme and childcare vouchers and opportunities for research, teaching and continuing professional development.
