Description HORIBA MIRA is currently seeking to recruit for a fixed term appointment of 3 years to complete research towards a PhD on the topic of “Dependability Assurance for Vehicle Autonomy”. This project is part of the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “SAS – Safer Autonomous Systems”, which is funded by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2010 programme. In order to be eligible, prospective applicants must:
  • not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months within the 3 years preceding appointment;
  • be within first 4 years of their research career (measured from date of award of degree conferring eligibility to register for PhD) at time of appointment;
  • be qualified for acceptance by the Coventry University Doctoral School;
  • understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English sufficiently well for them to derive the full benefit from the network training;
  • not have previously been awarded a PhD degree. Experience ESSENTIAL

DESIRABLE Experience/knowledge of: General purpose programming and scripting languages (e.g. C, Python etc.) Qualifications ESSENTIAL Degree equivalent to UK Bachelors degree in relevant subject (Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics etc.). Applicants must be eligible to undertake a PhD at University of York (UK). DESIRABLE Masters degree in relevant subject. Other information S PECIFIC PROJECT OBJECTIVES The objectives of the project sponsored by HORIBA MIRA include develop a unified and holistic approach to developing a range of assurance cases that could address a range of aspects of dependability for highly automated and fully autonomous vehicles, covering not only safety, but also reliability, availability and cyber-security. EXPECTED RESULTS The anticipated results may include:
  • Review of methods from safety, security, other sectors
  • Identification of approaches for non-deterministic/evolutionary features of AI
  • Possible framework for dependability assurance
  • Pilot demonstration WIDER NETWORK CONTEXT To work of this project should also contribute, in collaboration with the other PhD projects in the SAS network, to the development of novel safety assurance strategies which combine the architectural/design measures with the evidence in order to allow us to have trust in autonomous systems. WORK LOCATION The researcher will be based at HORIBA MIRA (Nuneaton, UK) and registered as an external PhD student at the Coventry University (Coventry, UK). Short term secondments to other (European) partners in the network will also be required (6 months in total). PUBLICATION AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT In addition to preparing scientific publications, the researcher will also be required to undertake related public engagement and outreach activities to communicate the results to the non-scientific world.
