Job Summary

Orthopedic Practitioner provides care and support to patients by performing procedures such as the application, adjustment and removal of casts, splints and braces, assembling and fitting traction apparatus, fitting and provision of crutches for mobility and wound management. The incumbent works across the hospital within Inpatient units, Emergency Departments, Surgery, and Outpatient clinics to provide high level care as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Key Accountabilities
  • Works autonomously to assess patients in a holistic manner in order to gauge the most appropriate cast, brace or splint option for their condition.
  • Communicates with the other Allied Health Professionals in a collaborative manner.
  • Performs fabrication, application, adjustment and removal of orthopedic devices.
  • Assists in application, maintenance and adjustment of skin, skeletal and manual traction.
  • Removes and applies wound dressings and assesses the condition of the wound prior to treatment.
  • Removal of sutures, staples, K-wires, pins and external fixators.
  • Applies, modifies (bivalve, wedge, window etc.) and removes casts.
  • Fabricates and applies a variety of splints and bandages using various materials. Example; finger splints, wrist splints, Velpeau bandages, humeral splints, ankle/ foot splints, elbow and knee braces, as ordered by the physician
  • Applies specialized casts such as hinged casts, shoulder spica, hip spica and body casts, total contact casting and ponsetti casting.
  • Works with the physician during procedures such as closed reduction of fractures and minor surgical procedures with or without anesthetic, using sterile technique.
  • Works with the surgeons and nursing team to carry out diagnostic tests and clinical procedures as required.
  • Measures and fits patients for ambulatory aids; Instructs patients regarding proper use and care.
  • Reinforces the teaching of medical information conveyed by the physician to the patient/ family regarding the specific injury, treatment plan, procedures and expected outcomes.
  • Teaches patient and family regarding wound care, cast care and skin care based on knowledge of potential problem and follow up assessment of the patient/ family learning needs.
  • Maintenance of orthopedic equipment and supplies.
  • Responds to telephone enquiries from patients by providing information or referring the problem to the appropriate member of the health care team.
  • Documents accurately all relevant and pertinent clinical information in the patient chart, schedules patient appointments and performs clerical duties as required.
  • Prepares, cleans, maintains equipment and instruments and disposes of contaminated items.
  • Ensures workspaces are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion before, during and after patient care.
  • Maintains an inventory of orthopedic supplies and equipment and ensures that casting and other relevant instruments/ consumables are always available.
  • Reports equipment failure to supervisor promptly.
  • Facilitates teamwork, and treats colleagues, patients/ families and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Interprets simple fractures and dislocations on X-ray film to ensure correct molding and position of casts and splints.
  • Performs on call duties and shift assignments as required by the orthopedic services.
  • Contributes actively in continuing education, attending educational activities and committees as requested.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
  • Follows all hospital related policies and procedures.
  • Remains current in clinical practice, technological advances in the orthopedic profession and participates in ongoing education and development.
  • Participates in the instruction and demonstration of casting techniques to students and other healthcare professionals such as medical students, interns and residents.

Essential Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – SELECTION CRITERIA

Preferred

ESSENTIAL

Education

Qualification in Orthopedic Casting from a recognized association and affiliation.

Diploma in Orthopedic Cast Technology or Associates Degree in Orthopedic Technology.

Experience

5+ years of relevant experience which must include significant pediatric caseload inclusive of;
  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in care, application, and safe removal of cast’s specialized to pediatric orthopedics (e.g. hip spica, Ponseti casts, etc.) and Emergency trauma.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in application of specialized braces including Pavlik Harness, Hip Abduction braces, Clubfoot Foot Abduction Orthosis (FAO), etc.
  • Demonstrated experience of wound care
  • Interpretation of X-rays.
  • Experience working with disabled or injured populations.
  • Experience in training individuals in the use of gait aids (crutches).

5 years specialist pediatric experience.

Certification and Licensure

Certification/ Licensing as a cast technician in country of origin.

Professional Membership

Membership of governing body/ professional organization in country of origin.
