Intermediate Marine Fisheries Biologist
Hatfield’s marine team continues to grow, and we are pleased to offer an exciting position for an enthusiastic and technically focussed marine fisheries biologist based in our North Vancouver or New Westminster office. This position presents an exceptional opportunity for the right individual to advance their career at one of Western Canada’s largest purely environmental consultancies. We have been providing environmental services to the marine sector in BC for over 40 years.
Candidates will have a deep knowledge and understanding of marine fisheries in BC. Experience of permitting and environmental assessment would also be beneficial but is not essential. Experience in sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas and/or aquaculture would also be advantageous. Consulting, regulatory and/or research-based experience are all considered beneficial for the role. The ideal candidate will revel in the challenges of delivering complex and interesting marine environmental studies in BC, Canada, and internationally, specifically working with our marine team in Bali, Indonesia that is providing sustainable fisheries advice globally. Duties will consist of design and implementation of field programs, data analysis and interpretation preparing study reports and advising clients. The successful candidate will also support business development activities through proposal preparation. The role will be fully supported by Hatfield’s Senior Manager of Marine Resources, Senior Partners in Infrastructure and Environmental Management and other senior marine and environmental professionals within Hatfield.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Recommend and implement programs for baseline surveys and monitoring for marine fish.
- Prepare baseline and monitoring reports covering marine fish, including data analysis and interpretation.
- Determine environmental impacts to marine fish.
- Provide advice on fish protection measures and controls.
- Provide oversight on provincial and federal regulatory requirements related to work in and around marine.
- Provide marine fisheries input to Environmental Assessment and permit applications and habitat offsetting plans.
- Ensure all tasks are performed to a high level of Health and Safety and Quality, in compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety and Quality Management Plans.
Competencies:
- Demonstrated technical competency and knowledge of marine fisheries in BC.
- Ability and interest to undertake and lead field programs, potentially in remote locations.
- Demonstrated ability to apply a high standard of scientific rigour to all projects and deliverables.
- Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
- Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation and analysis).
- Excellent communication (verbal and written – technical or scientific writing).
- Knowledge of aquaculture and sustainable fisheries.
- Experience operating a survey vessel and/or commercial diving would be an asset.
- International experience would be an asset.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of MSc in a marine fisheries related discipline.
- Minimum of 4 years’ post-graduate marine science experience.
- Registered Professional Biologist in BC or eligible to obtain within one year.
- Excellent analytic and research skills (leveraging a sound knowledge of scientific literature).
- Sound working knowledge of the fish protection provisions of the Fisheries Act.
- Experience with designing and implementing scientific studies/field programs and managing field teams and the collection of fisheries baseline data.
- Demonstrated experience working as a positive team contributor.
- Possess a current and valid Canadian Driver’s License.
