Legal Counsel- Global Litigation APAC

This role has been established as part of the Shell Pakistan’s Legal Department for the purpose of handling litigation matters and regulatory challenges in Pakistan in a proactive, timely, cost effective and professional manner in furtherance of business objectives and protection of shareholder interests. Accountabilities are the following

  • Identifying legal issues relevant to matters handled and acting with the appropriate urgency;
  • Handling a broad range of cases in a variety of areas including labor and employment;
  • Identifying all potential problem areas with respect to cases and matters and relating them to the business objectives;
  • Collaborating with the business to identify options for achieving business objectives within applicable legal and cost restraints and proposing legal resolutions to disputes and regulatory challenges;
  • Prepare the annual budget proposal, keeping in view the litigation trend as well as the ongoing prelitigation issues and their expected costs;
  • Negotiate the professional fee with external counsel firms to ensure the best possible quote;
  • Coordinate regularly with the external lawyers to gather updates on the ongoing litigations which is then incorporated in the team connect database;
  • Liaise with business and external counsel firms to gather the required information, including testimony and documents needed in order to prepare the case and/ or reply from SPL;
  • Ensure that external counsel firm enter into engagement letters and maintain s record of the same;
  • Coordinate to ensure that the witnesses in each case are communicated the date of hearing, attend court with the witnesses and guide them through the process;
  • Periodically communicating with the business and updating the business on significant developments in the matters handled;
  • Negotiate out of court settlements as per the mandate provided by the business and the lead litigation counsel;
  • Participate as an active member of the strategizing team to communicate learnings and devise ways forward to avoid potential litigations/ claims etc. of various natures including tax, contract law, commercial law and labor.
  • Fully understanding the Shell Business Principles and Code of Conduct and when appropriate challenging business decision-making process in respect of potential breaches;
  • Recommending legal contingencies and provisioning relating to litigation matters handling; reporting significant litigation risks within the Group Control framework;
  • Maintaining matters on the Group-wide matter Management database;
  • Interfacing with lawyers in other departments in Shell Legal Services regarding litigation risks impacting their areas of responsibility
