  • Description

Research Specialist in Network Diagnostics & Customer Experience

    Ipswich

Our purpose is to use the power of communications to make a better world. For each other, for our customers, for society and our communities. We need you to help us do this.

    Why this role matters

As the leading UK provider of broadband services, with the largest fixed broadband, public Wi-Fi and cellular networks, BT is reliant on the correct operation and performance of its core and access networks. Within BT Technology, Applied Research has a vital role to play supporting the development of network management systems including fault diagnosis and anomaly detection, enabling faults to be detected and fixed with the minimal impact to customers.

    What You'll Be Doing

The diagnostics and network assurance research team is responsible for detecting and diagnosing problems and analysing performance in the broadband network from the access network through to the core and peering networks that provide internet service. This includes the end-to-end performance and the impact and relationship between network and service performance and the behaviour of customers.
    This includes:
    • Physical understanding and modelling of access networks including the use of both physical models as well as machine learning to classify line behaviour or conditions as well as looking for common conditions in time and space over multiple lines
    • Modelling of user and service behaviour and cross-layer network performance to allow impact and root-cause assessment
    • The presentation of network performance and fault data (both per line and topological/geospatial) including for automated processes, technical investigations, user agents and customers
    • Anomaly detection of core and peering network problems from real-time (1 minute) streamed telemetry data using streaming platforms
The candidate will work primarily on using data science and machine learning to identify outliers and change points within complex multi-variate and multi-dimensional time-series data exploiting where possible knowledge about the network topology graphs and geographic location. They will also model the relationship between these network performance anomalies and the impact on customer behaviour as well as using machine learning to suggest interventions according to impact and likelihood of success.
This will involve prototyping methods (e.g. in R, python) through to deployment using big data platform technology (Storm/Flink/Spark using Scala).

    Responsibilities
    • Accountable for performing research in a specific domain (data science / machine learning / modelling for network diagnostics and assurance) or area that is typically unknown, complex, high impact and high value across multiple domains.
    • Responsible for developing novel research work and contributing towards recommendations for future research projects.
    • To develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the state of the art in big data, machine learning and modelling.
    • To develop and maintain a specialist knowledge of network diagnostic and assurance techniques and capabilities.
    • To develop and maintain strong relationships with customers in the BT customer facing divisions, stakeholders in BT’s technology delivery units, and stakeholders in other research teams (both internal and external).
    • To create and deliver excellent reports and presentations, presenting complex analysis results to customers and stakeholders in a clear and concise manner with an appropriate level for each audience.
    • To support BT’s intellectual property strategy by creating innovative solutions and protecting that intellectual property through patent filings.
    • To enhance BT’s reputation in this field by publishing work externally and taking opportunities to represent BT at conferences and industry events.
    • When required, to provide strategic insight and analysis of technology options, including development of commercial models in support of business case creation.
    • Where appropriate, to engage in relationships with external suppliers, consultants, partners and universities in order to gain new insights and technical capabilities or to accelerate the exploitation of new innovations.
We'll also need to see these on your CV
    • A scientific, mathematical or engineering background with experience in big data, machine learning, modelling and statistics
    • Education to Masters level in relevant subject or equivalent vocational expertise
    • Software development skills using languages such as R, Python and Scala
    • Knowledge of outlier detection, anomaly detection, change-points, root-cause analysis, time-series analysis, forecasting and similarity measures
    • Ability to work creatively and cooperatively as part of a small research team.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills and with ability to persuade and influence internal and external customers.
    • Experience of leading self-managed tasks within technical projects, liaising with project customers in the business units to define scope and outcomes.
    • Understanding of Deep Learning and Bayesian reasoning
    • Developer-level familiarity with Linux.
    • Knowledge of network protocols and architectures.
    • Experience of software development
    • Knowledge of data visualisation techniques/software
